Can we talk about Spider-Man for a Sec?

I’ve been reading comic books since 2nd grade, and it roughly began with bouncing back and forth between the Bat and the Webhead. Things started off great, but my life has consisted of a repeating series of very complicated relationships with this character, to say the least. The mid/late 80s and into the 90s hammered in my love for the character and his stories, but things started going bad around the beginning of highschool in the early/mid-90s. The clone saga was rough, but I could attribute that to the 90s just being the 90s. No harm, no foul. But then there was that weird “The Other” cocooning series that made me have to step away for a while. Fast forward to adulthood where I figured “One More Day” and “Brand New Day” would be a good place to pickup where I left off. Needless to say, that didn’t go very well, and at that point I straight-up ran away. Luckily, exploration mode was in full-effect at that time, and there was plenty of new titles and publishers to keep me excited about reading comic books.
Can we talk about Spider-Man for a moment?

MJ who?

Now that I’m in my mid-40s, I thought, “Ok, Romita Jr. is back in and it couldn’t possibly be worse that what it’s been.” Famous last words. I’m completely lost with this character, and can’t understand why the writing for Spider-Man has done such a disservice to the character for so long. Clearly the best thing to happen to the Spider in recent decades has been Miles. I don’t know if anything else can be done about Peter, or what, but I just can’t go back anymore. I got about 2 or 3 issues into the whole “what did Peter do?” thing, and it made me realize I just can’t give anymore to this character. I can freely accept disappointment based on my own personal expectations, and I don’t subscribe to the “cancel culture” rage by trying to influence others to be reactionary about things that don’t jive, but for me, Spidey has been worked into a nasty corner of hyper-mediocrity. If I ever decide to return, it would be a strictly Miles-centric exploration, but until that day comes, you’ll always be able to find me relaxing comfortably in the Batcave. β˜•

Madame Web’s got enough to deal with without Mephisto’s festering shenanigans getting in the way. β˜•οΈ
